There is only evidence that the volcano has erupted three times in its history. Due to the past eruptions the Yellowstone Volcano was labeled as a Super Volcano. A Super Volcano requires an eruption of a magnitude 8 or higher on the Volcano Explosivity Index. This means that the volcano emitted over a 1,000 cubic kilometers of magma. The first time the Yellowstone volcano erupted was around 2.1 million years ago which was the strongest of them all. It was approximately 6,000 times stronger than the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. The second time that we know of the super volcano erupted was around 1.2 million years ago and it was the weakest of the eruptions. The eruption was about 700 times stronger than the Mt. St. Helens eruption. The third and most recent eruption occurred 630,000 years ago. During that eruption the area collapsed in on itself and created the Yellowstone Caldera. Which today makes up most of the national park. Built up heat and exhaust from the eruption still power the parks geysers and hot springs (Yellowstone Park 2018).
