Under the Yellowstone National Park is a massive volcano that has remained dormant for the past 630,000 years. But according to new studies the lava plume under Yellowstone could be up to two and a half times bigger than originally thought(Than 2013). This could pose a great threat when the Super Volcano develops the conditions needed to cause a massive eruption. Scientist believe that after every blast the build up of lava is completely drained. This led to the belief that there would not be another eruption for thousands of years. Based on some new findings the lava could be replenished quite quickly and could possibly refill in a few decades after the beginning of volcanic activity (Hall 2017) .
How Long Until The Next Eruption?
Originally scientists believed that the next eruption would not be for tens of thousands of years. It makes sense because their is only evidence of three explosions in its history ranging over 2.1 million years. The last two eruptions were abnormally close together which could mean the next eruption could be farther apart. The other possibility is the volcano eruptions are getting closer together. The eruption still won't be for hundreds if not thousands of years (Martin 2017). What caused the controversy over the Yellowstone volcano was new findings that said that the last eruption happened a lot faster than previously believed. It did not say when the volcano was as actually going to erupt (Ciaccia 2016).
